David McPhail has written and illustrated nearly 200 books for children.
David was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and started drawing at an early age. After graduating from high school, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he began illustrating. His preferred medium today is pen and ink. He has been illustrating books since 1967 and his first trade book was published in 1971. He hasn’t stopped working since, having produced many different books through many different publishers. He considers himself to be “someone who tells stories through his art, using as few words as possible.”
David’s books have received several prestigious awards, including the New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year and inclusion on the American Bookseller Pick of the Lists.
David currently lives along New Hampshire’s seacoast with his wife, Jan Waldron, who is also a children’s author, their children, and their grandchildren. He continues to write and draw in his attic studio, and enjoys it just as much as when he began!
